Welcome to the Department of Visual Arts at Loyola University in New Orleans. As you may be aware by this point in your visit to the Loyola Web Site, we are a discipline within the College of Music and Fine Arts, in a small Liberal Arts University. Our mission is to provide the best possible art educational experience to those in the three degree programs in our department. We award a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design.

We currently have approximately 120 majors. We offer concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Digital Arts, Sculpture, Printmaking, Ceramics, Photography, and Art History. Graphic Design offers coursework in Traditional and Digital Print Media, Motion Graphics, and Web Design. Class sizes are small, usually 12-15 or less in studio classes. We pride ourselves on providing personal attention to all our students and encouraging their interaction with fellow students and faculty.

We achieve this by offering a substantial Foundations program, establishing a strong beginning for the art student’s career, and strong bonds with fellow art students in the following years. We attempt to guide the student to develop their critical thinking skills, writing skills, social skills, and business acumen in conjunction with the mental and physical facility required to compete effectively in the contemporary art world in whatever facets of it that they may choose to enter on graduation. Internship programs, intense senior exhibition experiences, and a broad foundation in all areas of the core Liberal Arts curriculum have achieved admirable outcomes in alumni that we point to with pride almost equal to that of their parents’.

Please examine our program carefully. We want you and your parents to make the right decision as much as you do. Your success is ours. Please feel free to call, write or come visit. We are always anxious to meet the next generation of visual artists, and look forward to helping them realize that goal common to us all.
