Student Opportunities

New Orleans is a devoted theatre community with numerous opportunities for students to experience their craft.

Internships are offered through local New Orleans theatres and by special arrangement with out-of-state theatres.

Theatre Bla-bla is a student forum featuring sessions with guest artists including casting directors, production managers, and other theatre and film artists visiting New Orleans.

Loyola assists students in their search for study abroad programs. Programs of note include: Binghamton University in London, James Madison University in Martinique, and British/American Dramatic Academy at Oxford, England.

The department also can recommend additional study in the United States at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and the Actors Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.

Recent graduates have furthered their study at the American Conservatory Theatre, DePaul University, Julliard, NYU, Roosevelt University, and The University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Opportunities for original productions abound in both the main and studio bill. Drama students conceived of the idea, from concept to writing and directing, of a contemporary play about homelessness. Their original work titled, "Ain't Nothing But a Thing," won local critical praise for its honest portrayal of life on the streets. The video version has been airing on New Orleans' public access channel.

Each year, students have the opportunity to propose original scripts for production in the Senior One-Act Festival. For two consecutive years, drama seniors have received the 1996 and 1997 Dawson Gaillard Award for Creative Writing in Scripts.
