
Robert Self
Technical Director

Robert Self is a Faculty/Staff member for the Department of Drama and Speech. He serves as the Technical Director for the Drama and Speech Department. His responsibilities include teaching Stagecraft and Lighting Design Classes, managing the scene shop, designing productions, and overseeing the operation of our Theater facilities.
Robert’s background in Technical Theater and Design is both varied and extensive. He spent over eleven years working on concerts and touring productions across the Northern California Coast. As a member of I.A.T.S.E. Local #33, he was responsible for the operation and technical staffing of the Theater On The Square in San Francisco.
Upon moving to New Orleans, he worked as an engineer for WNOE AM/FM radio station and then held positions as Technical Director for Le Petit Theatre, Southern Repertory Theater, and Rivertown Repertory Theater. While Technical Director for Southern Rep Theater, he served as Production Manager on tours to Moscow, Paris, Bonn, and Tiblisi. For three years Robert served as Entertainment Manager onboard a cruise line. Other experience includes production work on local and national conventions, noteworthy being the Lighting/Sound Production Coordinator for the 2000 NAACP Convention in New Orleans and Lighting Designer for the 2001 International Society of Black Engineers Convention in Florida.
Robert has developed an extensive clientele list for his Theatrical Consulting business. Facilities that have used his services are: Southern Rep Theater, Rivertown Theater, Jesuit High School, The True Brew Theater, Carlone’s Dinner Theater, St. Dominic School, Brother Martin High School, and St. George’s Episcopal School.
Aside from his technical background, Robert has many deign credits and awards. Robert has won three Big Easy Awards for Set Design, a Storer Boone Award for Set Design, and a J. Stanley Award for Set Design. His Lighting Designs have also received multiple nominations.
Robert is an active member and participant in the Lightnetwork, the PSW Lighting Forum, and a member of USITT.
